GAJE General Secretary - Invitation to Apply


The Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) will be appointing a new General Secretary (GS) effective February 2009.

The GS responsibilities include:
  • Facilitate Steering Committee (SC) meetings (The SC meets approximately four (4) times a year through email correspondence) The duties of the GS may include preparing the agenda, recording proceedings of meetings, and preparing draft reports for approval by the SC.

  • General correspondence: Act as principal point of contact for general inquiries of GAJE.

  • Fundraising: In conjunction with any GAJE fundraising committee(s), facilitate GAJE fundraising, by identifying potential sources of funding, preparing draft funding applications/proposals and providing support for publicity, outreach and membership development etc.


Requirements and requisite skills

  • GAJE membership

  • Institutional affiliation (University, Government, NGO, Legal Aid Clinic etc)

  • Strong organizational and administrative abilities

  • Excellent computer and internet skills

  • Proven experience in fundraising is highly desirable but not required


Remuneration: Currently an honorarium of $300 US Dollars per month is budgeted. The amount may increase. The GS is not an employee of GAJE.


Conflicts of Interest : A member of the GAJE Steering Committee is eligible to apply for the GS position and will continue to serve on the SC if appointed, subject to conflict of interest procedures that have been adopted by the SC.


Term of Appointment: The term of latest appointment began in February 2009.


Background Information

The Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) is an association of persons committed to achieving justice through education founded in 1997. Membership is open and free to anyone interested in justice education. Its primary activities to date have been bi-annual global conferences, a bi-monthly newsletter; and maintenance of a website www.gaje.org; The Steering Committee (SC) elected by the membership is the governing body of the organization. The Steering Committee has appointed a five-member Executive Committee (EC) charged with implementation of SC decisions and management of the organization between SC meetings. The SC also establishes standing and ad hoc committees to assist in the implementation of some of its decisions as well as take up specific roles as needs arise.
