Short Bio: Lauren E. Bartlett is Assistant Clinical Professor of Law at St. Louis University School of Law. She is establishing a Human Rights at Home Litigation Clinic at SLU Law in January 2020. The Human Rights at Home Litigation Clinic will provide free legal services to immigrants living in poverty in the St. Louis region and will also work on broader human rights projects. Prior to joining the faculty at SLU Law, Professor Bartlett was the Director of Legal Clinics and Associate Professor of Law at Ohio Northern University College of Law. At Ohio Northern, Professor Bartlett directed the clinic and externship programs, supervised students working on civil legal aid and transactional cases at the clinic, and taught additional experiential learning courses each semester. Previously Professor Bartlett served as the Research and Training Director at the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law, where she provided trainings and technical assistance to legal aid attorneys and public defenders using human rights law in their everyday work. She also worked with the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture and coordinated human rights advocacy programs on a variety of issues including human rights in the U.S., anti-torture, disability rights, and more. Professor Bartlett is a former legal aid attorney and worked at Southeast Louisiana Legal Services in New Orleans, Louisiana. Professor Bartlett co-founded the Louisiana Justice Institute, a nonprofit civil rights legal advocacy organization, where she focused on protecting the rights of persons affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Before obtaining her law degree, Professor Bartlett worked with nonprofit organizations in California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nepal, Ghana, Bangladesh and India, alongside advocates fighting for social and environmental justice. Professor Bartlett holds a B.A. from the University of California, Davis, and a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law. Professor Bartlett’s scholarship focuses on the intersections between legal ethics, access to justice, and human rights.
